Advances in polymer nanocomposite technology   Publication : [S.l.] Nova Science Pub Inc 2010 . 445 p. , Polymer nanocomposites have revolutionised the research effort in the field of composites as they lead to the achievement of synergistic effects from the organic and inorganic components of the system and have led to the expansion of the spectrum of application of the commodity polymers to more advanced high end applications. Although a number of successful systems could be achieved, the inorganic filler still could not be optimally dispersed on nanometer scale in non polar polymers. Also, the thermal degradation of the surface modification of the inorganic component disturbs the organic inorganic phase compatibility and hence the resulting composite properties. In recent years, many new techniques have been employed to overcome these problems which include more advanced modification protocols of the inorganic filler, development of more thermally stable surface modification and altogether new synthesis technologies for polyolefin nanocomposites. There has also been a constant need to compare the composite properties with the property models and hence to be able to predict the properties of the similar systems in advance. However, until now, the conventional models developed for conventional micro composites were used, which in no way maps the nanocomposite systems. The recently developed statistical as well as finite element methods focusing the real nanocomposite morphologies have been more helpful for this purpose. Though a tremendous research focus lies on these polymer systems, there is also a need to give some attention to more environmentally friendly nanocomposite systems and to develop methods to achieve proper recycling. 26 cm. Barrier properties of polymer clay nanocomposites   Publication : [S.l.] Nova Science Pub Inc 2010 . 271 p. , Polymer nanocomposites are organic-inorganic hybrids where the high aspect ratio inorganic filler can be delaminated in the organic matrix at the nanometer scale, thus leading to significant enhancement of composite properties at very low filler volume fractions. With the advancement of polymer nanocomposites technology, significant enhancements in mechanical and thermal properties of the composites could be achieved. However, other important properties like gas barrier properties, which form an absolutely necessary requirement for the use of materials in packaging and storage applications, were relatively neglected. By improving the barrier performance of the materials by incorporation of high aspect ratio nano platelets, one can expect to reduce the thickness of the commercial packaging laminates and other materials where thick material is required to be used to provide barrier to various gases. This can thus lead to significant amount of savings in the material costs and can make the polymer materials more light and also transparent as the nano scale dispersed filler would not scatter light. This book examines the factors affecting barrier properties enhancement in polar polymer matrices, which are different from case when non polar polymers are involved, thus indicating that the performance has to be quantised by case-by-case basis. The commonly used conventional models for prediction of permeation reduction are also less representative of the true microstructure of the nanocomposites. Thus the barrier performance of the polymer nanocomposite materials is also explored, separate from the more bulk based mechanical properties. 26 cm. Dual processing model of visual information cortical and subcortical processing par Sasaki, Hitoshi. Publication : [S.l.] Nova Science Pub Inc 2010 . 79 p. , In order to investigate a possible role of visual processing in regulation of adaptive behaviours, two behavioural experiments using colour stimulus were performed in human subjects. In the first experiment, hemispheric asymmetry of colour processing was investigated by measuring reaction time to a stimulus presented either in the left or the right visual field responded by the ipsilateral hand. In the second experiment, a modulatory effect of colour on sensory motor gait was investigated using a prepulse inhibition task. Traditionally, it was though that these two processes are in series, while in the present model, these processes are in parallel, in addition to the serial processing. The authors of this book examine the results of these two models and its implications, as well as other developments in the field. 23 cm. Encyclopedia of Polymer Composites : Properties, Performance and Applications   Publication : [S.l.] Nova Science Pub Inc 2010 . 1245 p. , In the last several years, polymer composites have been used heavily in the construction sector, such as to repair or design buildings and bridges, strengthen structures and as stand-alone components. About 30 percent of all polymers produced each year are used in the civil engineering and building industries. In addition to construction, polymer composites are also used in transportation (moulded parts, fuel and gas tanks), aerospace (satellites and aircraft structures), marine, biomedical (dental fixtures, prosthetic devices), electronics and in recreation industries. Such properties associated with polymer composites, in addition to its performance and applications, are continually being researched. Some topics examined in this book include the durability of the base components of FRP (fiber-reinforced polymer), specifically designed for civil engineering industry. The most common environmental agents, mostly responsible for the deterioration of the materials performance are also discussed. Furthermore, the interfacial adhesion between nanotubes and polymers and the different strategies to promote adhesion are explored to help readers understand the potential and challenges faced by scientists and engineers regarding the use of carbon nanotubes as a reinforcement phase in nanocomposites. This book also reviews the state-of-the-art of syntactic foams and shape memory polymers. The underlying principle for self-heating is also analyzed. Other chapters examine the processing of polymers into antimicrobial materials using polymer/clay nanotechnology, the various methods of synthesis for polyaniline-based nanoparticle-hybrid materials, and the steps towards understanding the complex relationships between specific factors in the production of plastic composites. 27 cm. Handbook of carbohydrate polymers development, properties and applications   Publication : New York Nova Science Pub Inc 2010 . 864 p. , Carbohydrates play an important role in many biological and biochemical processes, including the fertilisation, cell differentiation and maturation, protein folding and degradation. Carbohydrate polymers covers the study and exploitation of carbohydrate polymers which have current or potential industrial application in areas such as food, textiles, paper, wood, adhesives, biodegradables, biorefining, pharmaceuticals, and oil recovery. This book focuses on recent developments on carbohydrate-binding module (CBM) applications in the biomedical, biological and biotechnological fields. Furthermore, polysaccharides are complex carbohydrates that are made up chains of monosaccharide units linked by glycosidic bonds. This book reviews the literature on fibres spun from several polysaccharides and fibre spinning techniques, including both conventional fibre spinning methods and electrospinning. Resulting fibre properties and prospective applications are discussed. This book also reviews research on polysaccharide film-formation and characteristics, analysed mechanical and barrier properties of polysaccharide-based films, summarises applications of polysaccharide films in food products and makes conclusions as to the status of polysaccharide films and their future developmental direction. Other chapters in this book examine the pathways leading to the production of bioactive oligosaccharides that have biotechnological applications. The current progress in the development of marine carbohydrates into nutraceuticals and their applications are explored as well. 27 cm. Obesity and pregnancy par Briese, Volker. Publication : [S.l.] Nova Science Pub Inc 2010 . 184 p. , Obesity is now the most common risk factor in pregnancy. Of all pregnant women 10 - 20 per cent are obese and 1 per cent are morbidly obese. Both primiparous and multiparous women are increasingly affected by obesity: primiparae because of the rising prevalence of juvenile obesity, multiparae because of inadequate postnatal weight reduction. Pre-conception advice and interventions to minimise maternal and foetal complications of obesity in pregnancy are of vital importance but until now are often sadly inadequate. Obesity associated complications of pregnancy, particularly gestational diabetes, hypertension, pre-eclampsia, and thromboembolism put mother and child at risk. Furthermore, maternal obesity can lead to neonatal macrosomia. Therefore, the Caesarean section rate is high in obese women and vaginal delivery is more often associated with complications of delivery such as shoulder dystocia. Fetal programming during pregnancy is implicated in the development of obesity and the metabolic syndrome in the offspring. This way obesity is passed on from one generation to the next. In order to stop this vicious cycle of obesity, the primary prevention of the obesity epidemic that has taken hold of the Western world has to start in pregnancy. A range of topical issues is discussed in this book including the scientific background behind obesity and pregnancy, complications of pregnancy in the obese, and obstetric care for obese women. 27 cm.
